Paléa Atelier began as Hair Atelier but quickly outgrew that identity and evolved into something new. Founded by Héctor, our Dominican queen, Paléa was born from a personal journey: one of reclaiming identity and redefining beauty.
Growing up in the Dominican Republic, Héctor, like many, was told that curly hair wasn’t “good hair.” Natural textures were shamed with terms like pelo malo ‘bad hair’ or pajón (a word likening Afro-textured hair to unruly grass).

Digging through the history of hair in the Caribbean, we traced the roots of pajón and we discovered it’s an augmentative of paja, a word whose origin lies in the Latin word palea. As soon as we saw that word, something just clicked. By choosing the name Paléa, we reclaim a history and rewrite it on our own terms.
What began as a hair studio has become a creative space shaped by craft, culture, and care. It is a tribute to roots and a celebration of beauty in all its forms.
This is our story. And this is our Paléa. So tell us…
